As the owner of a Great Dane with degenerative myelopathy and an occupational therapist I have learned the importance of the team approach for comprehensive pet care. I also learned that my OT skills came in handy in caring for my own dog. This inspired me to seek out canine rehabilitation information. I have done self study from the Canine Rehabilitation text books as well as attending the annual conferences hosted here in NJ as both a participant and dog handler volunteer.

As an OT I have a valuable way of assessing the interaction between the pet, caregiver and home. I am able to provide the referring veterinarian, canine rehabilitation therapist or surgeon important information about the home, daily routines and potential carryover issues. I provide a comprehensive written report on the home environment and how the pet and caregiver are functioning within this environment. This can be extremely beneficial for improving carryover outcomes and minimizing injuries during the recovery period from surgery or trauma. For geriatric or special needs pets I am able to provide the team with information about adapting the home environment for ease of care and improving quality of life for both the pet and caregiver.
